Eden

Eden, the southern gateway to the Sapphire Coast is approximately 235 kilometres from Lakes Entrance, halfway between Melbourne and Sydney on the Princes Highway (A1) - the ideal location for your next family holiday or a few days, week or longer stopover as you travel this spectacular coastline.

Surrounded by The Ben Boyd National Park and set on magnificent Twofold Bay, picturesque Eden enjoys a temperate climate all year round.

Eden is a particularly beautiful area of the NSW Sapphire Coast which was originally settled by whalers and is now a fishing port and popular holiday resort town. Eden was named in 1843, after the British Secretary of the Colonies, Baron Auckland, whose family name was Eden.

The first town of any significance after crossing the Victorian border Eden has a permanent population of 4000 and is situated 50metres above sea level upon undulating land on a point that juts out into Twofold Bay. This idyllic coastal town is bounded to the north and south by National Park and woodland to the West.

Accommodation is plentiful with top class motels, flats, units, apartments, tourist parks, bed and breakfast, camping etc. It is a good idea to book ahead especially in peak holiday periods.

Eden Fishermen’s Recreation Club in the centre of town offers terrific family dining as does the Great Southern Hotel opposite. Several quality restaurants and cafes cater for every taste. The Wharfside Café on the wharf is not open all the time but when it is make sure you try their mussel dishes. The Wheelhouse Restaurant on the wharf is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Whales fill a big part of Eden’s history and no visit is complete without visiting the Killer Whale Museum which is home to numerous pictorial displays, full sized artifacts, television presentations and the authentic skeleton of “Old Tom” leader of a killer whale pack in 1929.

Humpback whales can be seen during October and November, there are many whale watching tours in operation or the Rotary Park Lookout is a great vantage point.
